History of gold

Gold: the metal of kings and the king of metals. Its magic and fascination has inspired as much the admiration of men as it has their folly and cruelty, with such consistency throughout the ages that it is easy to believe its power to enthral is as immutable as its beauty.

The first «gold rushes» can be traced back to antiquity and the ancient Egyptians were very proficient goldsmiths. Because of its rarity, gold quickly became a favoured means of exchange and trade.

From the barbarians who sacked Rome to the gold fever in California in the 19th century, from the Byzantine opus interrasile technique, to the scarcity of the yellow metal in the Middle Ages, from the pillaging of the Incas to the trading posts set up in Black Africa… gold has played a role in every age and in every civilisation.
